Do you know how safe the water is in your buildings?
As an employer or a person in control of the premises (eg a Landlord, Site Manager). Under general health and safety law, you have to consider the risks from legionella that may affect your staff or members of the public and take suitable precautions. Anyone who is involved in the supply of water systems and their components (eg designers, manufacturers, water treatment companies and suppliers) has to make sure that such equipment is designed and made in such a way that it is safe to use at work and that it can be easily cleaned and maintained.

What is Legionnaire’s Disease
Legionnaires’ Disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia which can affect anybody. It is caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila and related bacteria that can be found naturally in environmental water sources such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs but usually in low numbers. It may also be found in purpose built water systems and within all potable waters Hot or Cold.

If conditions are favourable the bacterium may grow creating conditions in which the risk from Legionnaires’ disease is increased.

The Risks
Impure water causes expensive problems and inconvenience inside buildings. Of the potential impurities, Legionella is the most serious. If not properly controlled, it can spread rapidly, causing severe damage to health, potentially it can be lethal. It’s a common misconception that air conditioning is the primary source of Legionella but half the UK’s outbreaks originate from hot and cold water systems, showers and spa baths, areas where you have a duty of care.

Take it for granted and the problems could be costly to put right, ruin your reputation and cause illness even death among your customers and staff. Our clients, schools, councils, insurance companies enjoy peace of mind knowing they have proven protection against Legionella and other hazards which is fully compliant with the ACoP L8 regulations and the health and safety of their clients and customers is in safe professional hands.
